Join DataLens Africa as an Egocentric Video Data Collector

We are recruiting contributors to help build a first-person (egocentric) video dataset capturing everyday hand-activity tasks. The footage you record will be used to train AI vision models that understand how people interact with objects in the real world.

About the Role

As an Egocentric Video Data Collector, you will record short video clips of yourself performing specific hand-based activities — things like preparing food, assembling objects, sorting items, or writing. The camera captures your perspective as if the AI were seeing through your eyes, which is why keeping both hands clearly in frame at all times is critical.

What You Will Do

  • Receive a set of task scripts describing specific activities to perform and record
  • Record video clips following strict framing guidelines — both hands must be visible in every frame
  • Ensure all footage is free of personally identifiable information (PII): no faces, name tags, screens with personal data, or identifiable background details
  • Submit clips through our secure upload portal for quality review
  • Repeat across multiple task batches as new projects are released

Recording Requirements

  • Both hands clearly visible at all times — footage where hands leave the frame will be rejected
  • Stable, well-lit environment — natural or consistent artificial light; avoid harsh shadows across the hands
  • PII-free — no faces, ID documents, screens with personal data, or identifiable people in the background
  • Minimum resolution: 1080p (Full HD) at 30 fps or higher
  • Audio: captured audio is acceptable but must not contain names, conversations, or other identifying speech

Equipment

You do not need to own all of the listed equipment. We accept submissions from various device types, and task batches are assigned based on the equipment you have available. Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and chest-mounted cameras are especially valuable for true egocentric framing but are not required to participate.

What We're Looking For

  • A calm, controlled environment suitable for close-up hand activity recording
  • Willingness to follow detailed task scripts precisely
  • Good attention to detail and commitment to quality guidelines
  • Reliable internet connection for file upload
  • No prior video production experience required — we provide full onboarding
